Dental implants are a popular choice for those who are suffering from tooth loss and want a permanent solution to fix their smile. While implants were originally discovered by accident as a form of tooth replacement in 1952, now they are a highly sought choice due to the many benefits they offer. Thanks to advancements in dentistry and the perfect combination of materials, implants hold almost a 100 percent success rate while improving the appearance and function of your smile. Piney Point Dental Implant Center proudly offers single tooth, multiple tooth, and full mouth implants for those suffering from missing teeth. Not sure what dental implants are made of? We use the best materials so the implants not only look great, but are made to last while never compromising the function.
What are Dental Implants?
To receive an implant, a small titanium post is surgically inserted into the jawbone. The use of the bio -compatible material allows the bone to naturally fuse to the implant to provide a strong, lasting foundation for the prosthetic tooth. Once the jawbone has healed to the implant, an abutment is attached to hold the prosthetic tooth in place. Using the best materials that are proven effective, you’ll have a strong replacement tooth that looks and functions just as a natural tooth.
What are Dental Implants Made of?
Early implants used vitreous carbon, which was successful, however, the material was very brittle and led to complications. Titanium was found to be the most beneficial, but it is often mixed with alloy because pure titanium is often too soft. Today, over 95 percent of the implants used are made from titanium alloys, which allow them to have over a 98 percent success rate. Not only do titanium implants last for many years, but there are also no known reports of allergic reaction to the material, offering the perfect solution for those who have metal sensitivities.
There are also metal-free implants available, which are made from zirconium, which is somewhat similar to titanium, but not identical. While the material is strong, hard, and accepted by the body, the long-term success of the implant remains unknown.
All-in-all, titanium is more versatile than zirconia, allowing it to be used for both the implant post and abutment. This allows it to be used for a number of tooth restoration implants, including single tooth and overdentures.
With the titanium post serving as the tooth root, a porcelain dental implant crown is most often used to provide a realistic and functional replacement tooth. However, some crowns may include zirconia, leucite, or alumina.
Benefit from Dental Implants
Since implants first became available to the public, they have undergone constant testing and research to find the most proven-effective materials to use. Currently, titanium posts and porcelain crowns are the most effective and popular choice. However, research continues and the materials may change in the future.
